DESIGN CONTEST for MOBO’S

2010 T-Shirts and Posters

MoBo’s birthday is coming up in the spring, and we celebrate with our best party of the year: the ANNUAL FUNDRAISER! The coop has been around now for FOUR years! And this is our opportunity to celebrate the past year and rally excitement for all of the great things that will happen in 2010. Our plan is to do this with a rockin party complete with live bands and much merriment.

The money earned at the fundraiser helps the coop continue our kids day program, provide snacks and games in the summer, prizes for the kids day race, heat for the shop in the winter, purchase disposables, new tools, and invest in shop improvements! It is uber important, and luckily, loads of fun.

So! We’ll be needing an awesome poster and spoke card to publicize the event so that EVERYBODY and their mom knows where and when the party will be. We’ll also be looking for a t-shirt design to go with this. Double points if the t-shirt and poster designs jive. Many thanks in advance to our amazingly multitalented membership!

MoBo has a lot of small friends who like to hang around the shop. They come by to ask us for new inner tubes, new chains, and occasionally a muffin when we get gifts from the Hostess outlet. We let them come in, we have to yell at them some times for riding their bikes in the yard, but it’s obvious that we have a soft spot for them.

So we better be out with our porch light ON for Halloween. Members, come on down! Be at MoBo to help hand out treats to the next generation of Northside! Bring a bag of candy if you can to help give out, or bring your kids by to trick-or-treat with us 6-8pm, Saturday October 31st. Wear your costumes!

We will be taking candy donations in the next two weeks during open shop!

If you know the parts room, maybe you know that it sometimes looks like the day after a party, or the kitchen after Thanksgiving, or maybe the inside of a whale. Well, this month, the guts of the coop are growing up. No more chaos.

The plan: reorganize and clean up; rethink and rebuild.

Here’s where we are in that process: Sunday morning hit the coop hard with a group of volunteers who came with a mission. They descended on the back room and wiped it clean, leaving not a dust bunny in their wake. They threw out the bad parts, and split the good ones into their respective genera. They drank all the coffee, and played on the scooch. It was great. Much progress was made.

This was the first of three Parts Room Rehab days this October. Plans are made for deconstruction and building next Sunday, October 11th from 10am to 2pm… and a work overflow day on October 24th from 12pm to 3pm.

Make sure to be in on the action! Come to the coop 10am – 2pm next Sunday for a good time and the chance to own your handprint on the coop. We need help thinking of ways to organize better! We also need materials!

Please send an email to PRforMoBo[at]gmail[dot]com if you think you can help in strategizing this week. Thanks, volunteers!

Mosh n Brew showed up with a pivot bike and some tall bikes. Mike the Bike Man, a fellow who does something similar to MoBo, except out of his pocket and based in his backyard in Newport, was there with several choppers and a reconstructed bike trailer. There was a really cool vintage bike with carrots painted all over it. The scene was nothing but ridiculous bikes everywhere the eye could reach out and grasp. Check out the Bike Newport site to see more of them!

Thanks to the 21 volunteers from MoBo and BioWheels, our joint rest stop/repair station at Bike MS 2009 was a big hit. “Mo’s Bar” was the theme, Gatorade was on tap, and the karaoke hits just kept on coming. Over 900 riders participated in the two-day event to raise money for MS research and support, and many of the riders personally complimented us on our fun and “edgy” rest stop. (Our good looks and mechanical assistance even earned us a few tips!)

Thanks to all of the volunteers who gave their time, energy and talents to unload and reload the supply trucks, supported the riders, and made sure our rest stop had the most tawdry bathroom graffiti, most tacky decor, sweatiest dancers, and best/worst music. Well done!

Once again the Ten Year Lates Scooter Club’s WKRP Scooter Rally (http://wkrp.tenyearlates.com/) has come and gone and was it ever fun! Those folks know how to have a good time, and between you and me, they know where to donate their raffle money!! A big thanks to XYL for choosing the MoBo Bicycle Cooperative to once again be the recipient of their love and the proceeds from the big Saturday night raffle they throw. Three Cheers!!

Of course MoBo was there in force, selling raffle tickets, helping with the breakfast and cookout, cleaning, and anything else needed. Well, that and making sure all those thirsty scooterists had a friend to drink with. This year The Ten Years approached MoBo about building a custom bicycle to raffle off at the rally this year. Excitement. Of course we said yes! That was a no brainer. A lot of folks had their hands in this project to some extent or another; from donating parts and ideas all the way to putting some elbow grease to the metal. A thanks needs to go out to all of you. Special thanks to Mycle’s Cycles (http://www.myclescycles.com), in Georgetown, OH, who donated that sweet old Schwinn cruiser. Sammi Zumdick rolled out there with me to pick it up. We then took it downtown to the Bike Haus (http://www.myspace.com/bikehaus), where Mitch and Jerry, of the Read (http://www.myspace.com/readlikered), put together some monster front forks for us. Next stop was Spring Grove Sheet Metal (http://www.sgsheetmetal.com/), who were gracious enough to give us the metal we used to fill in the tank area of the bike frame. Noah Bauer crafted those welds with patience and humor, as well as the wrench kickstand, those extra wide handlebars, and the brake stay on the front forks. Oh yeah!! He also set the head badge, too!! Thanks, Noah!!
Our own John Wood offered up from his deep well of knowledge, as well as laced that rebuilt 3-speed internal hub with twisted spokes on a nice beefy fast rim. Style. True style. Brian Brain, from Campus Cyclery (http://www.capuscyclery.com), in Clifton, hooked us up with super tiny, oddly shaped replacement springs for the hub rebuild. Digital Kate and Sammi took mock-up and hype pictures for us. Sammi also put together a booklet documenting the progress of the project that went with the biccycle to the winner.
American Metal Cleaning (http://www.americanmetalcleaning.us), in Fairfield, OH, was the frame and fork’s next stop, where Mark not only put a busted out a great powder coating, but also dropped some knowledge on putting in those cheery sparkles that really pop in this spring’s sunlight. Cherry. Red Baron cherry.
Ron, from Bicycles And More, on Glenmore, donated stems when we couldn’t find a match within the MoBo archives. Noah, from the Vulcan Scooter Sect, donated one of the rear view mirrors. Quadrophenia, baby!! You know if you’re building a bike for a scooter rally, you gotta have mirrors and lights. A bunch of them! I dare say we did not disappoint.

Congratulations to Dave Cunningham, of the Comet, for winning the bike. He has already dubbed it the Sticky Bun Express. A worthy title! It makes us happy to see it staying in the neighborhood and thrilled to think we’ll see it cruising down the Ave on many a pastry mission. Be sure to bring it by for tune-ups, Dave!!

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this such a successful project. We were the talk of the rally. Give yourselves a pat on the back for good job well done.

So, I thinking lowrider with sidecar for next year. What do you all think?

Cheers!
